Since 2012, the purchase and sale of existing buildings with a useful floor area of more than 50m2, single-use units, apartments and leases of more than one year are subject to mandatory energy certification. 

The certificate classifies the property in the energy class according to a predetermined scale. The scale ranges from the most favorable "AA++" category to the weakest "JJ" category.
